Zero-energy building implementation strategies and follow up

Zero-energy building strategies can be implemeted using advanced energy submeters and analytics.

Buildings have a significant impact on energy use and the environment. Commercial and residential buildings use almost 40% of the primary energy worldwide. The energy used by the building sector will continue to increase, unless they can be designed to maximum energy efficiency standards and produce enough on-site energy to offset their energy demand. Achieving zero energy is an ambitious yet increasingly achievable goal that is gaining momentum across geographic regions and markets. Near zero-energy buildings (nZEBs) have very high energy performance and the low amount of energy that these buildings require comes mostly from renewable sources. The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive requires all new buildings to be nearly zero-energy by the end of 2020. All new public buildings must be nearly zero-energy by 2018.

Meazon is a contributor to the first Passive House by renovvation (EnerPHit) in the Mediterranean region. The building operators chose a Meazon metering system to accurately measure energy consumption (and soon production by solar PV) to ensure consumption levels are kept within the international standards’ requirements.

The approach to zero-energy building requires careful consideration of all aspects affecting energy consumption and on-site generation. Whether this is a deep retrofit of an existing building or a new built, energy monitoring is a prerequisite in all zero-energy building strategies. Submetering energy utilization -and generation- will enable the designer, owner or occupant to follow up the implementation of interventions made to improve energy efficiency. In order to achieve maximum efficiency, targeted metrics can be established for particular processes such as lighting, HVAC, plug loads etc and gradually attempt to drive consumption at minimum levels. Meazon provides remote On/Off and scheduling capabilities for particular processes enabling active control and management of energy consumption and the related operating costs. Meaningful energy management, anywhere, anytime.

Meazon’s Bizy energy monitoring and control platform features wireless, easy to install and revolutionary small energy meters, with an open interface to the cloud and low Total Cost of Ownership. The platform is integrated to a Microsoft Azure cloud based energy analytics platform, providing meaningful energy management anywhere anytime.
